Primitivo di Manduria
A brother of the Californian variety zinfandel. Primitivo is a big bodied red wine with higher alcohol. They typically have a very strong berry aroma with a big long finish.
Negroamaro
A commonly produced wine to the south of the region. It has a medium body and cherry/raisin style aroma. The variety is found in many of the DOC wines like Brindisi, copertino and salice Salentino.
Salice Salentino
The oldest of the DOC wines from Apulia located in the south end of the region produce a dark full-bodied red wine with ripe berry aroma. Typically higher in alcohol. Salice Salentino can also be made as white wine as well as dessert wine.
Castel del Monte
This DOC area is named after a 13th century castle that sits at the top of a hillside. It is the most northern in Apulia for quality wines. The wines here are made of the Montipulciano d’Abruzzo grape and the Uva di Troia variety.
